Norwell Cat 3/4 yesterday.
Course: rolling circuit of about 1.1 -1.2 miles – 20 laps for 25 miles. Short steepish climb each lap at the finish.
The race:
Moderate to high pace from the get-go. There were a few attack in the 1st half of the race. This included a brave solo attack from Julian, who got a good gap. I blocked for a period to slow the pack, but there was a headwind for a significant portion of the course, so too tough for him to stay away. Nice effort though. All other breaks also got caught.
I sat in the front 5-10 for the race. With 2 to go, a solo break went off after the hill at the start-finish. I accidentally gapped the field on the climb, looked at the solo guy (with 100m gap), and decided it was late enough in the race to try to bridge to him and stay away. I caught him and tried to encourage him to work together, but it wasnt very effective. After 2/3 of a lap I saw the pack surging toward us and a counter attack went off with two riders. After bridging to the solo guy and pushing hard, i couldn’t quite catch their wheels. They went on to win by 16 seconds. I tried to recoup to not get spat out the back, having been caught. held in the front 10 of the pack and got passed on the final climb as i ran out of steam from my earlier efforts. Finished 12th, but not too disappointed as it was a mixed 3/4 field.
